NEWS FROM THE GL3 COMMUNITY HUB
Moving into the summer we will see big changes at the GL3 Community Hub. It is time for us to say farewell to Age UK and their ‘Engage’ project. Our three year partnership has been brought to an end as Age UK move on to provide care for the elderly in the community rather than in a day centre environment. We shall miss all of the staff and the clients who have passed through our doors over the years and wish Age UK every success.
With change brings opportunities, and so we are delighted to confirm that we will be launching a senior citizen lunch every Monday starting from 9th July. Lunches will be served from 12.30pm and will include a two course meal and drinks. We want to provide a very relaxed and friendly environment and to hold monthly entertainment for those that attend.
The café will also introduce a ‘Fish and Chip’ day on Friday’s and hope to expand the seating into our social area to accommodate more customers. Don’t forget we are now open on Saturday’s from 9am – 2pm and can provide a ‘Saturday all day breakfast’.
We have an exciting programme over the next two months which starts with our summer fete on Saturday July 21st. It is a world war one themed day, with all fundraising proceeds going to ex homeless military veterans. You can expect WW1 trench cooking, authentic uniforms, helmets and equipment, have a trench photo experience, mini assault course, face painting, fancy dress, no mans land football competition, tombola, big prize raffle and much more. The event is free admission to all and is from 12-6pm. Why not come in military fancy dress (parents too!) and be paraded in our fancy dress competition. We will also be unveiling a WW1 themed mural which has been designed and created by the young people from our youth club.
Summer holidays are always a time to be with the children and so we are pleased to have some PAW Patrol characters here on Wednesday 15th August. There will be two hours of fun and a small buffet for the children. Tickets are £5 per child and the numbers are restricted to 50, so please book early for your tickets. On Wednesday 22nd of August we see the return of the ever popular DJ Sparky and his travelling disco. Entrance price is £2.00 per child so get ready to dance and be entertained.
Our ‘Community Suite’ is now up and running and we aim to provide help to our local residents with the help of WEA (Adult Learning), Citizens Advice Bureau, Green Square and a ‘Job Club’. We have received a very kind donation of five computers from ‘IT Africa’ which will help with the launch of our basic computer lessons and giving access to the internet for job seekers. If you wish to find out more information about what is available, please visit the ‘Hub’ or call the office 01452 715058.
We hope to see you soon😉
The GL3 Community Hub is a charity with a board of trustees who are here to serve the local community of Churchdown and the surrounding areas, and as such we are always interested in new ideas. We are always in need volunteers who can help in many different aspects of running our charity and we are always looking to strengthen our trustee board. Please contact the manager Mike who will be happy to help you get involved.
